Ajit Pawar emerged as one of the most influential and assertive leaders in Maharashtra’s complex political landscape. Trained under his uncle Sharad Pawar, he rose rapidly through the corridors of power, never hesitating to change political loyalties in pursuit of his ultimate ambition — becoming the Chief Minister of Maharashtra. A six-time Deputy Chief Minister, Ajit Pawar created a rare record by serving under Congress, Shiv Sena and BJP-led governments. Known for his tireless work ethic and sharp political instincts, he survived major controversies including the alleged ₹70,000-crore irrigation scam and land disputes linked to his son Parth Pawar.
Born on July 22, 1959, to Asha and Anantrao Pawar, Ajit Pawar made his political entry in 1982 through cooperative institutions before becoming Baramati’s dominant force. Though born in Devlali Pravara, his political identity was inseparably tied to Baramati, from where he was elected to the Assembly eight times. His rebellion against Sharad Pawar in July 2023 reshaped Maharashtra politics, granting him control of the NCP name and symbol. After a setback in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, he staged a strong comeback by winning 41 Assembly seats, decisively outperforming the Sharad Pawar-led faction. However, before his lifelong dream could be realized, a tragic plane crash brought an abrupt end to one of Maharashtra’s most dramatic political careers.
