The re-release trend seems to be fading lately. With old movies hitting theatres one after another, audiences are starting to lose interest. Moreover, since ticket prices haven’t been reduced, people are showing little enthusiasm. Even notable films like Stalin, Yamadonga, and Aditya 369 faced tough times during their recent re-releases.
In such a situation, it’s surprising to see a Kannada dubbed movie being brought back to theatres. What’s even more shocking is that the announcement for Upendra’s re-release came all of a sudden, with the October 11 date revealed and a trailer dropped — all without any prior buzz. The film Upendra was a hot favorite among cine lovers when it originally released.
Released in 1999, Upendra wasn’t just a small hit — it was a blockbuster. The film’s unusual storytelling and the bizarre yet fascinating hero characterization struck a strong chord with audiences. Starring Raveena Tandon and Prema as the female leads, and featuring Gurukiran’s powerful music, the film became a rage among the masses.
Upendra not only won Filmfare Awards but was also screened at international film festivals in India and Japan. For many modern-day directors like Prashanth Neel, Upendra remains a major reference point and creative inspiration. When it was re-released in Karnataka a few months ago, it received an overwhelming response from fans.
Now, bringing Upendra back to Telugu theatres so suddenly isn’t without reason. The distribution rights for this re-release are handled by Mythri Movie Makers, the same banner currently producing Andhra King, in which Upendra plays a crucial role. This collaboration likely led to the idea of re-releasing Upendra.
Whatever the reason, one must experience Upendra at least once to understand why he’s admired as both an actor and a director. However, had the makers planned better promotions and prepared audiences in advance, the re-release could have reached a wider crowd. Now, it remains to be seen how the film performs this time around.
