Trolls Over Dorothy’s Climax.. What Did the Director Say?

Along with The Paradise, the Tamil film Dorothy also became a widely discussed topic over the past weekend. Directed by Karthik Subbaraj, known for films such as Pizza and Jigarthanda, the movie features Keerthy Suresh, Rishikanth and Sananth in the lead roles. Despite receiving positive reviews from critics, the film faced intense trolling over its climax from the day of its release. The portrayal of Sananth’s character as a gay man and the way his romantic relationship with Rishikanth’s character was presented in the climax became controversial among some viewers. The lip-lock scene, in particular, sparked extensive discussion.

Responding to the criticism on social media, Karthik Subbaraj said that the Twitter world is very small. He stated that if some people are uncomfortable with portraying the life of a gay person in a film, that is their issue. The director said he knew beforehand that the lip-lock scene would not be accepted by everyone, but added that many viewers understood the emotion behind it. He also said that the scene received applause in several theatres. Regarding a controversial dialogue delivered by a transgender character, Subbaraj explained that it was written keeping the social circumstances of the 1990s in mind, with the intention of suggesting that society would change over the following decade.
