Superstar Mahesh Babu and visionary filmmaker SS Rajamouli are collaborating for the magnum opus Varanasi, and the project officially launched today in Hyderabad with grandeur. During the event, Rajamouli revealed that the team is introducing a groundbreaking technology in Telugu cinema—Premium Large-Scale Format for IMAX.
Rajamouli explained that most films, including Baahubali and RRR, are shot in standard cinema-scope format and later converted to IMAX during post-production. However, Varanasi will break that pattern.
“We are bringing a new technology to Telugu cinema—Premium Large-Scale Format IMAX. Typically, we shoot with regular cameras and convert the footage to IMAX. But Varanasi will be presented in full-screen format right from the shoot,” Rajamouli said.
He also added that just like Superstar Krishna, who pioneered many technological innovations in Telugu cinema, his son Mahesh Babu is now taking that legacy forward by introducing new cinematic technology with Varanasi. The film will offer a full-frame, immersive viewing experience in IMAX upon release.
Produced by Durga Arts in collaboration with Showing Business, Varanasi is slated for a grand worldwide release in Summer 2027.
