

Legendary filmmaker Singeetham Srinivasa Rao passed away at the age of 94 in Chennai’s Kaveri Hospital, leaving behind an illustrious legacy spanning nearly seven decades. Known for his innovative storytelling and willingness to experiment with different genres, Singeetham carved a unique place for himself in Indian cinema. His demise marks the end of an extraordinary chapter in Telugu filmmaking, with several generations of filmmakers and audiences remembering his contribution to the art of cinema.
Born on September 21, 1931, Singeetham began his filmmaking journey under the guidance of legendary director K. V. Reddy. He worked as an assistant and associate director on several landmark films, including Mayabazar, Jagadeka Veeruni Katha and Sri Krishnarjuna Yuddham. He made his directorial debut with Neethi Nijayithi in 1972 and went on to establish himself as a filmmaker who was never confined to a single genre.
Singeetham’s filmography featured some of Indian cinema’s most distinctive experiments. Pushpaka Vimanam, starring Kamal Haasan, famously told its story without conventional dialogue, while Aditya 369 introduced Telugu audiences to an ambitious science-fiction and time-travel narrative. Films such as Bhairava Dweepam, Mayuri, Apoorva Sahodarargal and Michael Madana Kama Rajan further showcased his versatility. He also worked extensively in Tamil and Kannada cinema and received several national and state-level honours during his career.
Even in his 90s, Singeetham remained passionate about filmmaking. At the age of 94, he directed Sing Geetham, produced by Nag Ashwin, demonstrating that his creative spirit remained undiminished by age. From his early association with K. V. Reddy to his later experiments with contemporary filmmaking, Singeetham Srinivasa Rao remained committed to exploring new ideas. His films, distinctive storytelling and contribution to Indian cinema are expected to continue inspiring filmmakers and audiences for generations to come.
