Kaantha released last week with massive expectations. The film stars Dulquer Salmaan in the lead, Bhagyashree Borse as the female lead, and Rana Daggubati in a key role.
Despite the strong star cast and solid technical quality, the film failed to attract audiences both in India and overseas.
The Telugu version’s collections in India have been extremely poor. The Tamil version performed only moderately and did not reach the expected mark.
In North America, the total collection so far is 170,000 USD, and it may finish around 200,000 USD, which is far below the basic recovery level. The film needs 1 million USD to break even.
Although the movie initially generated positive buzz, it didn’t convert into ticket sales. Weekday numbers dropped drastically.
Tamil films usually perform well in Canada, but Kaantha faced rejection even there, with very low footfalls. In many overseas markets, shows were cancelled due to lack of audience.
This highly anticipated film, already known for its long production delays, has delivered disappointing results everywhere. Considering the huge budget involved, Kaantha is clearly heading toward becoming a box office disaster, raising concerns for distributors and buyers who expected strong returns.
