Actor Harshavardhan has clarified that clothing is only one aspect of freedom, but clothing alone does not define freedom. In a recent interview, he shared his views on the comments made by Shivaji, which have become a hot topic in the industry over the past few days. Harshavardhan’s remarks have gone viral on social media, with many netizens supporting him for explaining a sensitive issue in a balanced and thoughtful manner. Speaking on the matter, Harshavardhan said, “Instead of trying to change the mindset of thieves, it is better to lock our doors. That is something within my control. It is easy for me to advise my family members to be cautious. But it is difficult to tell thieves to ‘think responsibly’ or to request them not to attack people who are alone when I am not around.”
Reflecting on the ongoing discussions, he noted that one important point becomes clear: two different topics should never be mixed. When talking about freedom, the focus should remain on freedom itself, and when discussing clothing, the conversation should be limited to clothing. He pointed out that even when intentions are good, an improper way of expressing opinions can lead to controversies, as seen in the cases of Shivaji and Anasuya. In his view, it was the manner of Shivaji’s expression that was at fault, not the intent.
Harshavardhan further explained that freedom has many dimensions. Education, relationships, the freedom to eat what one likes, and the freedom to travel to places of one’s choice are all part of freedom. Dressing according to one’s preference is also one aspect of it. However, he emphasized that wearing modern clothing alone should not be equated with freedom. While discussing attire, the term “freedom” should be used with caution, as dressing choices often depend on the place and circumstances one is in.
