Growing Importance of Heroines in Tamil Cinema!

Tamil cinema has been witnessing a noticeable shift in the way female characters are being written and presented. Filmmakers are increasingly giving heroines strong and meaningful roles that hold as much importance to the story as the male leads. In ‘Thai Kilavi’, Radhika Sarathkumar impressed audiences as Pavan’s mother, while a senior actress also received a significant role in ‘Vishwanath and Sons’. Preethi Mukundan stood out with a different performance in ‘Blast’, while Abhirami was also given a substantial role that added value to the story.

In ‘DC’, Wamiqa Gabbi’s character Chandra was given a strong characterization by director Arun Matheswaran. Mamitha Baiju also received a performance-oriented role in ‘Vishwanath and Sons’ and impressed as Maddy with her energetic performance. Similarly, Preethi Asrani’s role in ‘29’ and Anaswara Rajan’s character in ‘With Love’ played important parts in their respective stories. Tamil filmmakers are now focusing on well-written female characters not only in women-centric films but also in mainstream commercial cinema. It remains to be seen whether Telugu filmmakers will draw inspiration from this evolving trend.
