Bollywood actor Aamir Khan has found himself at the centre of controversy after a Muslim religious cleric, Mufti Maulana Ibrahim Hussain, reportedly issued a fatwa over his recent interfaith marriage to Gauri Spratt, which was solemnised under the Special Marriage Act. The cleric claimed that, under his interpretation of Islamic law, the marriage is not valid because Gauri Spratt is not a Muslim.
In a video statement, the cleric said that a Muslim man is not permitted to marry a woman of another faith unless she embraces Islam, adding that marriages conducted in violation of these religious principles are unacceptable under Sharia. He also stated that a person should not enter into another marriage without fulfilling the responsibilities arising from previous marriages. As of now, neither Aamir Khan nor Gauri Spratt has issued an official response to the remarks.
