Malayalam cinema is enjoying a golden streak. Blockbusters like 2018, Manjummel Boys, and Thudarum have proven that these stories can captivate audiences far beyond Kerala, smashing box office records one after another. Now, Lokah: Chapter One Chandra has raised the bar even higher. The film, directed by Dominic Arun and produced by Dulquer Salmaan, has earned over ₹300 crore worldwide in just six weeks. With a budget of about ₹30 crore, Lokah has surpassed Mohanlal’s Empuraan to become the biggest Malayalam film ever and the first to reach the ₹300 crore milestone.
To put this in perspective, Pulimurugan broke ground by reaching ₹100 crore in 2016, while Manjummel Boys pushed the boundary to ₹200 crore in 2024. Now, Lokah has set a new benchmark at ₹300 crore. Notably, each of these record-breakers also found roaring success in the Telugu states. What makes Lokah’s triumph even more extraordinary is its female lead. The film now stands tall among the highest-grossing women-centric movies in Indian cinema history.
Lokah stars Kalyani Priyadarshani in the lead role, with Naslen and Chandu Salimkumar playing key parts. Lokah is the first part of a planned five-film franchise and also marks the debut of Malayalam cinema’s first female superhero.
