In today’s film industry, promoting a movie has become just as important as making one. Every filmmaker and PR team works hard to push their film into the spotlight. But sometimes, these promotions unintentionally lead to unexpected controversies. Something similar happened with ‘The Girlfriend’, where a video from a theatre showing a young woman removing her chunni after getting emotional in front of director Rahul Ravindran went wildly viral online. Starring Rashmika Mandanna, The Girlfriend recently released and earned very positive responses, especially for its emotional climax. Moved by that scene, the girl expressed her feelings directly to the director, which got recorded and spread across the internet.
Once the makers shared the video officially, the clip gained even more attention. However, soon people started commenting that “removing a dupatta is not women empowerment,” and even some celebrities made sarcastic remarks, turning it into a controversy.
Responding to all this, Rahul Ravindran posted a long clarification note:
He confirmed that the incident was completely spontaneous,
It was not a PR stunt,
He was initially unsure about sharing the video but later decided to.
He also clarified that the film never tells women to remove their dupatta.
Finally, giving a strong message to the trolls, he wrote:
“When men remove their shirts during festivals or celebrations, no one questions it. But when a woman expresses emotion by removing her chunni, suddenly people lecture about ‘culture’? That’s unfair.”
His post is now going viral all over social media.
