Vijay’s final film Jana Nayagan, which was scheduled for a Sankranti release on this month 9th, has been postponed due to censor issues. Despite making changes suggested by the CBFC, objections raised by a board member led to the certification being withheld. The matter reached the Madras High Court, which stated that a verdict would be delivered on the morning of this month 9th, prompting the makers to defer the film’s release. As a result, the refund process for advance ticket bookings has begun.
Over 4.5 lakh tickets were sold through BookMyShow in advance, and the platform has initiated full refunds, which trade circles say is the largest refund in its history. Theatre-level bookings are also being refunded directly. Meanwhile, support for Vijay has been growing within the film industry, with filmmakers expressing concern that if big films face such hurdles, smaller films stand little chance. Many have urged for a more supportive environment to protect the theatrical ecosystem.
