Big-Budget Movies with Period Stories

A new trend appears to be emerging in big-ticket star films, with filmmakers increasingly choosing period settings instead of contemporary timelines. Several upcoming projects are reportedly set in the 1980s, 1990s or earlier eras. Balakrishna’s ‘NBK111’ is said to have a 1993 Bombay backdrop, while Yash’s ‘Toxic’ features an old-Goa setting. Prabhas’ ‘Fauji’ has a historical backdrop, while ‘Ranabali’ is also reportedly set in a period setting.

One major reason is the freedom a period setting offers filmmakers. In the present day, mobile phones, CCTV cameras, social media and Google Maps can create several logical challenges for a screenplay. Older eras allow filmmakers greater creative flexibility while exploring gangs, underworld stories, political drama and action. Vintage cars, costumes, sets and locations also add a distinct visual appeal. However, a period backdrop alone cannot guarantee success—the story still needs to feel fresh and engaging.
