Avatar 3 - (Fire and Ash): which released amid massive expectations, has delivered a surprising box office opening. Directed by James Cameron, the film was expected to register one of the biggest openings of 2025, but the numbers fell short of projections.
The film collected $137 million worldwide on its opening day, failing to surpass this year’s biggest opener, the animated blockbuster Zootopia 2, which earned $150 million on day one. The situation was particularly disappointing in North America, where Avatar 3 managed only $36 million, including preview shows.
Compared to Avatar: The Way of Water (2022), which opened with a staggering $441 million worldwide, the third installment could not even cross half that figure. With the first two films crossing the $2 billion mark during their full runs, Fire and Ash now faces a tough road ahead. Strong weekday performance and a solid boost during the Christmas holidays will be crucial to determine whether Avatar 3 can recover and achieve long-term box office success.
