Popular actress and television host Anasuya Bharadwaj, who is active on social media, has sparked a debate with her recent comments on Indian traditions and women’s adornment. In a video shared on Instagram, she spoke about the changes in her mother’s life after the death of her father three years ago.
Anasuya recalled that her mother used to wear a bindi, apply kajal and adorn her hair with flowers, but stopped following these practices after becoming a widow. Questioning this tradition, Anasuya said women are introduced to bangles, henna and kajal from childhood by their mothers and grandmothers, and wondered why these practices should be removed after a husband’s death. Her comments went viral, with some netizens supporting the discussion while others criticised and trolled her, questioning whether she follows the same principles in her own life.
