Amala Paul Responds to Criticism of the South Indian Film Industry

Actress Amala Paul, who has established a name in both the Telugu and Tamil film industries, recently opened up about the way women are portrayed in South Indian cinema. Responding to criticism that actresses are not always presented appropriately, she said it would be unfair to blame the entire industry for the shortcomings of a few films. According to Amala, the way women are portrayed in a particular film could reflect the thinking of the director or the team behind it. She also noted that the industry is changing, with more women-centric films being made today.

Amala said she has been part of the film industry for more than 15 years and believes women are increasingly working to secure the place and opportunities they deserve. Speaking about her own career, she said she has always preferred challenging and unconventional roles instead of following a fixed template. She recalled taking a bold risk with the 2019 film Aadai, admitting that she had concerns about how the role might affect her image and future opportunities. Looking back after several years, Amala said she now considers that decision a major act of courage, although she honestly feels she may not be able to take up a similar role again.
