In recent times, the weather has been changing rapidly, with cold spells, rainfall and increased humidity and dust in certain areas. Such conditions can have a significant impact on health. During these periods, people often experience cough, nasal congestion and cold-like symptoms. While many attribute these issues to allergies, experts warn that frequent coughing may indicate a weakened immune system.
Dr. L.H. Ghotekar, Medical Director and HOD at Lady Hardinge Hospital, explained that coughs can result from cold air, dust, or pollution. However, recurrent colds, sore throat, fatigue and frequent illnesses are signs of a compromised immune system. When immunity is weak, the body is unable to effectively fight off viruses and allergy triggers, which leads to recurring symptoms.
To prevent these issues, it is important to keep the body protected according to weather conditions. Protecting the nose from cold air and dust, staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water and maintaining cleanliness in the home and surroundings are essential measures. If symptoms persist for an extended period, consulting a doctor is recommended. Additionally, maintaining a balanced diet and ensuring adequate sleep are key to supporting overall health.
