GLP-1 medications such as Ozempic and Mounjaro, originally developed to treat Type 2 diabetes, have become increasingly popular for weight loss. Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Brian Nwannunu says these medications can significantly reduce stress on the joints by lowering body weight. According to him, every pound of weight lost decreases the pressure on the knees, offering substantial pain relief and improving mobility for many patients.
However, Dr. Nwannunu cautions that rapid weight loss may also lead to reduced muscle mass, which can negatively affect joint stability and bone density. This may increase the risk of injuries and osteoporosis, particularly among older adults and postmenopausal women. He recommends consuming adequate protein and incorporating resistance training into daily routines while using GLP-1 medications. Patients are also advised to consult healthcare professionals before making any changes to their treatment or exercise plans.
