Many people choose toothbrushes based only on price or brand, but the hardness of the bristles also plays an important role in dental health. Toothbrushes are mainly available in four types: extra soft, soft, medium, and hard. Extra soft brushes are suitable for people with bleeding gums, sensitive teeth, or those who have undergone dental treatments. Dentists generally recommend soft toothbrushes for people with healthy teeth and gums as they effectively remove plaque while protecting gums.
Medium toothbrushes may help people with more stains on teeth, but excessive pressure while brushing can damage gums. Hard toothbrushes are not recommended for regular use as they may wear down enamel and cause gum recession. Children and people with tooth sensitivity should avoid hard brushes. Experts advise changing toothbrushes every three months or whenever bristles become damaged, along with brushing twice daily using the correct technique.
