People are often warned that bathing during a fever can worsen the illness or cause a cold. However, medical experts say that bathing is generally safe during fever if done correctly. A lukewarm water bath can help the body feel refreshed, improve comfort and remove sweat and impurities from the skin. Fever can also cause weakness, body aches and discomfort, making proper hygiene and comfort important.
The temperature of the water is crucial. Experts advise against using very cold water, as it can cause blood vessels to constrict and trigger shivering, which may make the body feel colder and uncomfortable. At the same time, very hot water can increase body heat and worsen discomfort. Therefore, lukewarm water that is comfortable for the body is the safest option. If a person is too weak or dizzy to take a bath, they should not be forced to do so. Instead, a clean cotton towel dipped in lukewarm water can be used to gently wipe the body, particularly the neck, armpits, arms and legs.
A few precautions should also be followed before and after bathing. Avoid direct exposure to cold air by switching off the fan or air conditioner before entering the bathroom. After bathing, dry the body and hair thoroughly with a clean towel and wear light, breathable cotton clothes. Experts also advise against covering the body with unnecessarily heavy blankets, as this can trap heat.
