The pan-World prestige film Varanasi, starring superstar Mahesh Babu and directed by S.S. Rajamouli, is being made on a massive budget of around ₹1,300 crore. The movie is produced under Show You Banner by S.S. Kartikeya and Sri Durga Arts by K.L. Narayana. Around 50% of the shooting is already complete and the team aims to wrap up in the next six to seven months. Every update from the title announcement has gone viral, reflecting the huge anticipation surrounding the film.
Mahesh Babu plays Rudra in the movie and reportedly appears in four other distinct roles. Global star Priyanka Chopra is the female lead, while Malayalam star Prithviraj Sukumaran plays a key villain role. The film, based on a time-travel concept, will also feature Mahesh Babu briefly as Lord Rama, as revealed by Rajamouli himself.
The makers have officially announced a 2027 release for Varanasi. According to industry talks, the film is likely to release on April 9, 2027, during Sri Rama Navami, possibly due to Mahesh Babu’s Rama sequences. Recently, another interesting rumor about the movie has become a hot topic in the industry. There is speculation that Bollywood star Deepika Padukone may be appearing in a key role in the film. Some reports suggest she could either be paired opposite Prithviraj or act alongside Mahesh Babu as the heroine. However, there has been no official announcement from the makers regarding this. Meanwhile, discussions are also ongoing about whether director Rajamouli specifically chose Deepika despite the controversies surrounding her recent working hours and remuneration issues. According to industry sources, there is currently no truth to these rumors. The makers are moving forward with complete clarity in their planning, and until an official statement is made, nothing can be confirmed about Deepika’s entry. Nevertheless, even a small rumor about a project like Varanasi quickly becomes a massive sensation, further highlighting the high expectations surrounding the film. We will have to wait and see how much of this news turns out to be true.
