US President Donald Trump is visiting China after nine years, aiming to ease rising tensions between the two countries over trade and bilateral relations. During the visit, Chinese President Xi Jinping reportedly advised Trump to avoid falling into the “Thucydides Trap,” a concept often used to describe conflict between an emerging power and an established superpower.
The term originates from ancient Greek history, where the rise of Athens challenged the dominance of Sparta, eventually leading to the devastating Peloponnesian War. Modern political analysts use this theory to describe the growing rivalry between the United States and China, as China continues to expand its economic, military, and technological influence. Xi Jinping’s message is seen as a call for strategic cooperation rather than confrontation, urging the US to recognize China as an equal global power and avoid escalating tensions into conflict.
