Each tithi during Pitru Paksha is considered significant in Hindu tradition. It is believed that performing Shraddha and Tarpanam on the tithi associated with a deceased person brings peace and satisfaction to the ancestors. The Shraddha performed on the Dwadashi tithi of Pitru Paksha is known as Dwadashi Shraddha or Barasa Shraddha. In 2026, Dwadashi Shraddha is observed on October 7. The ritual is performed not only for deceased family members but also in remembrance of those who renounced worldly life and became ascetics. Hence, it is also known as Sanyasi Shraddha. Tarpanam, Pinda Pradanam, Shraddha rituals, feeding Brahmins, Annadanam and charitable activities are traditionally observed on this day.
Dwadashi is also associated with the worship of Lord Vishnu. Therefore, chanting Vishnu’s name and reciting the Vishnu Sahasranama are considered auspicious on this day. The presence of Magha Nakshatra on Dwadashi Shraddha in 2026 is also regarded as spiritually significant. Devotees traditionally remember their ancestors through Tarpanam, Shraddha rituals, Annadanam and charity. The prescribed timings include Kutup Muhurta from 11:45 am to 12:32 pm, Rohina Muhurta from 12:32 pm to 1:19 pm and the afternoon period from 1:19 pm to 3:40 pm.
