The West Bengal government has announced free travel for all women in state-run buses starting from June 1. The scheme will be applicable for both short-distance and long-distance routes operated by government transport services across the state. This major decision is aimed at supporting women commuters and reducing their daily travel expenses.

To implement the scheme, the government will issue QR-based smart cards containing the beneficiary’s name and photograph. Until the cards are distributed, women passengers can travel free by showing a valid photo ID and collecting a zero-value ticket from bus conductors. The announcement has received positive reactions on social media.
