The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has brought relief to the people suffering from intense heat, announcing that the Southwest Monsoon is likely to reach Kerala on May 26. This is about five days earlier than the usual onset date of June 1, marking an early arrival of seasonal rains across the country.
The monsoon plays a crucial role in India’s economy, as more than 50% of net sown agricultural land still depends on rainfall. Nearly 40% of the country’s total crop production comes from rain-fed agriculture. Therefore, the Southwest Monsoon is vital for India’s food security and overall economic stability.
