At least 19 people were killed and several others injured in a stampede at Sarbajanin Durga Mandapam in Chor Bagan during Dussehra celebrations in the city, police said on Saturday. The West Bengal government has taken a serious note of the incident. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has already been formed to probe the matter. The Kolkata Police has intensified its efforts to find out the reason behind the stampede. They are closely monitoring the situation that preceded the stampede. They are scanning the CCTV cameras at the mandap.
It was found that someone had warned on the microphone that the canopy was in danger of collapsing. A senior police officer said the warning is believed to be the reason for the incident. He said an investigation is underway in that regard. The situation here is dire. This canopy is going to collapse. The warnings in the video are clearly heard. No one made that statement. He said they were investigating the reason behind the warning.
On the other hand, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari lashed out at the organisers of the event. He blamed the incident on their negligence. An inquiry has been ordered into the matter, he said. He said the incident was caused by a microphone announcement. Due to lack of maintenance, confusing advertisements and torrential rains, It is believed that the stampede took place due to a large number of people rushing to take shelter.
