Vegetable prices are rising sharply across Hyderabad, creating difficulties for low- and middle-income households already struggling with the cost of essential commodities. According to the report, prices of some vegetables have increased by as much as 50% within a few days, with tomatoes, onions, green chillies, beans and cluster beans among the items putting pressure on household budgets. Open markets in the Old City areas of Gowlipura, Chatrinaka, Lal Darwaza and Falaknuma have reportedly become expensive for ordinary consumers. Some vendors are quoting prices for a quarter kilogram rather than a full kilogram, reflecting the growing burden on buyers. The report cites the El Niño effect as a possible factor behind the increase.
The rising costs are also affecting community food distribution during the Dasara and Devi Navaratri celebrations, as well as catering services for weddings and other functions. In comparison with open markets, Rythu Bazaars are reportedly offering several vegetables at lower prices. At Falaknuma Rythu Bazaar, Thursday’s listed prices per kilogram included tomatoes at ₹27, brinjal at ₹23, okra at ₹23, green chillies at ₹60, beans at ₹55, carrots at ₹45, cluster beans at ₹65, onions at ₹40 and potatoes at ₹18. Residents have urged the authorities to establish special counters and provide tomatoes and onions at subsidised rates. They are also calling for measures to control prices and ensure that essential vegetables remain affordable.
