A significant development has emerged in the ongoing US-Iran diplomatic efforts. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio reportedly ordered a delegation led by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to leave the United States, according to Axios. US officials said the decision followed limited progress in negotiations between Washington and Tehran. Araghchi and his delegation had remained in New York during the United Nations General Assembly as indirect talks, mediated by Qatar, continued between the two sides.
Iran, however, rejected the account that its delegation had been expelled from the United States. The Iranian delegation said its departure from New York had been scheduled in advance and that the US State Department had been informed about the plan on September 17. Key differences remain between Washington and Tehran over Iran’s nuclear programme, sanctions and the Strait of Hormuz. The latest development highlights the difficulties facing the ongoing diplomatic efforts.
