A fresh diplomatic development has emerged amid efforts to revive discussions between the United States and Iran. According to Axios, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio instructed the Iranian delegation attending the UN General Assembly, including Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, to leave New York after indirect negotiations reached a stalemate. US officials said the move followed a lack of progress in talks mediated by Qatar, with Washington and Tehran remaining divided on key issues.
Iran, however, has disputed the US account. Iran’s mission to the United Nations said the delegation left New York according to a travel schedule that had already been communicated to the US State Department on September 17, denying that it had been expelled. Despite the conflicting accounts, diplomatic efforts have not completely ended, with Qatari mediators reportedly continuing discussions with both sides. The latest development highlights the difficulties surrounding negotiations on Iran’s nuclear programme, the Strait of Hormuz and broader regional issues.
