Indian students reportedly faced harassment at Meriden Park in the West Midlands region of England, after a video showing them being confronted by a self-styled vigilante group went viral on social media. According to international media reports, members of the group, known as the Chelmsley Wood Patriots, were patrolling the park late at night when they confronted several Indian students. The group members allegedly questioned why they had come to England, ordered them to leave the park and warned them not to return. The group later shared footage of the incident on social media, claiming that its members were patrolling to protect women and children and arguing that parks should be reserved for children and families.
The video sparked widespread criticism, prompting the group to remove it from social media. Local activists alleged that the students had done nothing wrong and were targeted because of their nationality. Police also condemned the group's actions, clarifying that only authorised police officers have the power to conduct such checks. Authorities stated that they would not support the group's activities and indicated that legal action could be taken. The incident has raised concerns about the treatment of Indian students in the UK and the activities of self-appointed groups attempting to enforce their own rules in public spaces.
