The Supreme Court hearing in the Twisha Sharma death case drew nationwide attention after Solicitor General Tushar Mehta made an emotional statement while representing the Madhya Pradesh government. Referring to messages allegedly sent by Twisha Sharma about her troubled marriage, Mehta told the court, “Better to have a divorced daughter than a dead one.” He stressed that parents should place their daughter’s safety and mental well-being above social pressure and societal expectations surrounding marriage.
The hearing also focused on the investigation into the death of 33-year-old Twisha Sharma at her marital home in Bhopal earlier this month. Mehta supported transferring the probe to the CBI, while the Supreme Court cautioned against media discussions that could influence the investigation. The case has reignited conversations across the country about emotional abuse, marital pressure, family support, and the continuing stigma attached to divorce in Indian society.
