US President Donald Trump’s strict immigration policies appear to be affecting Indian students planning to pursue higher education in the United States. Increased deportations, arrests and tighter visa restrictions have raised concerns among prospective international students. According to reported figures, the number of Indian students travelling to the US on F and M category student visas fell by 39% in August compared with the same month last year. The decline is significant because August typically sees a surge in international student arrivals ahead of the fall semester. Data from the International Trade Administration (ITA), part of the US Department of Commerce, reportedly shows that 25,321 Indian students arrived in the US on these visa categories in August this year, compared with 41,540 in August last year.
Reports suggest that the decline in Indian student arrivals has become more pronounced since Trump returned to office for a second term. Stricter visa requirements, concerns over visa rejections, uncertainty surrounding employment opportunities after graduation, social media screening and rising education costs are among the factors influencing students’ decisions. Education consultants say these challenges are prompting Indian students to reconsider their plans for studying in the US. However, immigration policies alone cannot be established as the sole reason for the decline, as visa procedures, financial considerations and employment prospects may also influence students’ choices.
