Trump Reportedly Backs Gianni Infantino for Future UN Secretary-General Role

US President Donald Trump has reportedly expressed admiration for FIFA President Gianni Infantino's leadership, praising his role in bringing countries together through football. Following the FIFA World Cup final in New Jersey, where Spain defeated Argentina to lift the trophy, reports emerged that Trump is considering supporting Infantino for the post of United Nations Secretary-General. Trump's special envoy, Paolo Zampolli, said Infantino's successful leadership of FIFA's 211 member associations demonstrates his ability to unite the global community.

Despite the reported endorsement, the race for the UN Secretary-General's position is expected to be highly competitive. The post requires broad support from the 15-member UN Security Council while avoiding a veto from its five permanent members—the United States, United Kingdom, France, Russia and China. Current UN Secretary-General António Guterres' term runs until the end of December. Although Infantino reportedly earns significantly more as FIFA President than the UN Secretary-General's salary, analysts believe any nomination could face opposition from several UN member states.
