US President Donald Trump has revealed that he approached Google CEO Sundar Pichai with an unusual proposal to rename the Atlantic Ocean as the “Trump Ocean.” Speaking at a public rally, Trump recounted asking Pichai whether Google could make the change on its maps. The idea followed his earlier efforts to rename prominent geographical features, including the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America for US government purposes. Trump said he had even shared an image illustrating his proposed ocean name.
According to Trump’s account, Pichai declined the proposal, explaining that oceans are different because they extend across numerous countries and cannot be renamed in the same way as smaller geographical features. Trump said he eventually decided to drop the idea, adding that the Atlantic Ocean would retain its existing name. However, Google has not independently confirmed the reported conversation. The episode has attracted attention amid Trump’s repeated suggestions to rename major geographical landmarks.
