US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said President Donald Trump’s decision to temporarily waive certain tariffs and sanctions under the Graham Act would provide a 60-day period to assess their potential impact on the global and American economies. The move offers temporary relief to countries, including India, that could face additional tariffs for purchasing Russian oil. Rubio said the administration needed time to evaluate the economic consequences before deciding on the appropriate course of action.
Rubio also highlighted the pressure on global energy supplies arising from geopolitical conflicts, including the Russia-Ukraine war and tensions involving Iran and the Houthis. He noted that India continues to purchase significant quantities of Russian energy despite diversifying its energy sources, and described India as an important US partner. The temporary waivers are intended to give Washington time to weigh energy security and economic concerns against its sanctions policy.
