A Nigerian Air Force ATR-42 military aircraft crashed in Ondo State on Monday while flying from Benin City to Lagos on a routine mission, killing all 32 people on board. The aircraft was carrying 25 passengers and seven crew members. Air traffic controllers lost contact with the plane at around 8:13 GMT, after which search and rescue teams launched a major operation. The wreckage was later located near the coastal town of Igbokoda, close to a naval base.
Rescue teams recovered the victims from the crash site, which was located in a difficult swampy area. Local residents also assisted the authorities in reaching the wreckage. Nigerian President Bola Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and ordered the Nigerian Air Force to conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of the crash. Officials are expected to examine possible technical problems, weather conditions, flight data and whether the crew issued any emergency warning before the aircraft went down.
