Tension Grips Telangana Assembly on First Day of Session

The first day of the Telangana Assembly session witnessed tense scenes both outside and inside the House, with protests, detentions and heated exchanges dominating proceedings. Police stopped BRS MLAs and MLCs wearing black T-shirts carrying anti-government slogans from entering the Assembly, leading to a scuffle between the legislators and police personnel. BRS MLAs Sunitha Laxma Reddy and Sabitha Indra Reddy alleged that police personnel behaved inappropriately with them. BRS working president KTR claimed that he was injured in an alleged police assault, while Legislative Affairs Minister Sridhar Babu accused KTR of attacking police personnel. Harish Rao and other BRS leaders also attempted to enter the Assembly after removing their black T-shirts when they were denied entry in the attire. As tensions escalated, police detained the BRS representatives and later released them at Telangana Bhavan.

Meanwhile, remarks allegedly made by BRS MLC Tatha Madhu against Assembly Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar during the confrontation triggered a major controversy in the House. The Assembly held a special discussion on the issue in the afternoon, with Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, ministers and legislators from the Congress, BJP, AIMIM and CPI condemning the remarks and demanding action. Speaker Prasad Kumar became emotional and broke down during the discussion. Separately, BJP members insisted on a discussion on 22A, which pertains to the list of prohibited properties, and staged a protest near the Speaker’s podium. After their demand was not taken up, BJP members walked out of the Assembly in the evening.
