Education plays a vital role in shaping an individual’s personality and building a responsible society. In India, September 5 is observed as Teachers Day to commemorate the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. A teacher is traditionally regarded as the person who removes the darkness of ignorance and lights the lamp of knowledge in a student’s life. The Indian tradition gives teachers a highly respected place through the principle of “Acharya Devo Bhava.” Teachers not only impart academic knowledge but also guide students towards discipline, values and responsible living. In the modern era, they also help students develop the knowledge and skills needed to face a changing world.
Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was born on September 5, 1888, in Tiruttani, Tamil Nadu, into a Telugu family. He had an illustrious career as a teacher, professor, vice-chancellor, diplomat, Vice-President and President of India. Known for his exceptional scholarship and ability to explain complex subjects in a simple manner, he became an inspiration to generations of teachers and students. Several universities honoured him with honorary doctorates, and the Government of India conferred the Bharat Ratna on him in 1969. After retiring from the presidency in 1967, he spent his final years in Madras and passed away on April 17, 1975. His life reminds us that respecting teachers means following the values and path they show us. On Teachers Day, let us express our gratitude to every teacher who has shaped our lives and helped us move towards a brighter future.
