Tamil Nadu Takes Major Step on Water Security..

Tamil Nadu is planning a major 400 MLD desalination plant at Minjur, near Chennai, with an estimated investment of around ₹4,800 crore. Once operational, the project is expected to have the capacity to convert around 400 million litres, or 40 crore litres, of seawater into potable water every day. The proposed plant is aimed at meeting the growing water demand in North Chennai, Avadi, Ponneri and Minjur.

The project is also expected to add seawater as a large-scale alternative source and reduce dependence on reservoirs, lakes and other conventional freshwater resources. This could be particularly important during periods of water stress. For the rapidly expanding Chennai metropolitan region, the proposed desalination plant is intended to strengthen long-term water security and support a more diversified and reliable water-supply system.
