A viral video has triggered a political controversy in Tamil Nadu, with some social media accounts falsely claiming that the woman seen getting out of a car is S. Keerthana, the Industries and Investment Promotion Minister and Sivakasi MLA. Responding to the claims, Keerthana clarified that the woman in the video is not her. She also criticised the discussion surrounding women’s clothing and personal freedom, questioning why a woman’s appearance or happiness should become a subject of public scrutiny.
Keerthana alleged that political opponents were resorting to personal attacks and misinformation when they had no substantial issues to criticise the government. She also expressed support for the woman in the video and apologised for her being dragged into the controversy. DMK IT wing secretary TRB Rajaa condemned the online harassment of women over their personal choices and said people unconnected to the issue were also being targeted. The controversy has once again sparked debate over social media trolling, women’s privacy, dignity and personal freedom.
