Tamil Nadu Government Launches New Scheme for Newborns

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has launched the ‘Thaai Maman Thanga Mothiram Thittam’ welfare scheme, under which eligible newborns delivered in government hospitals and primary health centres will receive a one-gram, 22-carat gold ring. The scheme applies to eligible babies born on or after June 22, 2026, with mothers required to be permanent residents of Tamil Nadu. The initiative is intended to honour motherhood, encourage institutional deliveries and strengthen public trust in government healthcare facilities.

The Tamil Nadu government has earmarked an annual budget of ₹755.83 crore for the scheme. The statewide launch was held at Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai, where the Chief Minister presented gold rings to newborns. The government had already procured 1.28 lakh rings for the initial rollout. The scheme is expected to encourage more families to choose government healthcare facilities for childbirth while providing the benefit to eligible newborns across the state.
