Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav, known for his comic performances, appeared before the Supreme Court in connection with cheque bounce cases and received an unusual piece of advice from Chief Justice Surya Kant. After hearing Yadav explain his financial difficulties, the CJI reportedly suggested that he make a good film and return to entertaining audiences so that he could rebuild his public image. The Bench also jokingly remarked that the court has lawyers who are good actors and suggested that he could make a film with them.
The cheque bounce cases relate to financial assistance reportedly taken for Yadav’s directorial film Ata Pata Laapata. According to the case details, he had received financial support from Murli Projects Pvt. Ltd. and later issued cheques that were allegedly dishonoured. Yadav told the court that he had acted in around 200 to 250 films and claimed to have suffered losses of nearly Rs 200–250 crore over the past 13 years, including substantial losses from Ata Pata Laapata. He said the film was intended for a wide theatrical release but ultimately did not reach theatres. Yadav has already paid Rs 1.15 crore in connection with the matter, while his lawyers told the court that a buyer was willing to purchase ancestral property and deposit another Rs 85 lakh with the Supreme Court Registry. The court, however, expressed dissatisfaction with his conduct and indicated that only limited time would be granted.
