The Supreme Court has expressed strong displeasure over the delay in addressing road safety concerns near the Delhi High Court in New Delhi. During a hearing on Friday, a bench comprising Justices J.B. Pardiwala and K.V. Viswanathan raised concerns about inadequate traffic management and the lack of proper pedestrian crossing facilities at the Mathura Road junction near the High Court. The issue was brought before the court through a petition highlighting the risks faced by pedestrians. The bench stressed that authorities must identify the problems and implement practical solutions instead of limiting their efforts to committee discussions.
Representing the Centre, the Additional Solicitor General informed the court that a committee was examining the matter and that discussions had been held with senior officials. However, the bench questioned the need for another high-level committee and suggested involving an amicus curiae to help identify the problems and recommend effective measures. The court directed the authorities to complete the necessary work by November 25 and warned that the Chief Secretary could also be summoned if officials failed to act. In a pointed yet humorous remark, the judges said they would sit on a dharna outside the Delhi High Court's main entrance and would not leave until the work was completed. The remarks have drawn attention amid several ongoing protests in the national capital.
