The Supreme Court on Monday stayed the Madras High Court's order directing the Tamil Nadu government to ensure that cows and calves are not slaughtered during the Bakrid festival. The apex court granted interim relief while hearing a petition filed by the Tamil Nadu government challenging the High Court's directions.
The state government argued that the High Court's order was inconsistent with the provisions of the existing law, which permits the slaughter of cattle under specified circumstances in designated areas. Taking note of the submissions, the Supreme Court observed that the High Court's directions require modification and stayed their operation until further consideration.
