The Supreme Court has issued notices to the Central Government and state excise departments over a petition seeking a ban on the sale of vodka in tetra packs and sachets. The petitioner argued that such packaging can mislead consumers and may also encourage minors to consume alcohol by making it resemble fruit juices.
The petition, filed by the organisation Community Against Drunken Driving, was heard by a bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant. The petitioner’s counsel submitted that several alcoholic products are being sold in misleading packaging without proper warnings. The court was urged to direct uniform regulations across all states and union territories regarding such packaging practices.
