The Supreme Court on Monday heard petitions challenging the functioning and decision-making process of the Election Commission under Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. A bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant examined allegations that certain key decisions related to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls were taken without the concurrence of the other Election Commissioners.
The petitioners have sought an investigation into the alleged unilateral decisions and demanded the constitution of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by a retired Supreme Court judge. The Supreme Court issued notices to the Centre and the Election Commission seeking their responses. However, the court did not pass an immediate interim order seeking Gyanesh Kumar’s suspension.
