Supreme Court Issues Key Directions on TMC Election Symbol Dispute

The Supreme Court has issued key directions in the dispute over the Trinamool Congress (TMC) party name and election symbol. With rival factions led by Mamata Banerjee and Ritabrata Banerjee staking competing claims over the party’s identity, the court has asked the Election Commission of India to indicate a clear and realistic timeline for resolving the dispute. The bench stressed that the proceedings should not be allowed to drag on indefinitely and sought an early resolution of the matter.

The Election Commission had on September 17, as an interim measure, frozen the use of the TMC name and its traditional ‘Flowers and Grass’ symbol by the rival factions. The two groups were subsequently allotted temporary names and symbols for the upcoming bypolls. Mamata Banerjee challenged the EC’s decision before the Supreme Court. The Election Commission is now required to inform the court about the timeframe within which it can adjudicate the dispute over the party name and symbol.
