The Supreme Court has issued key directions concerning local body elections, instructing authorities not to publish the final list of candidates until the 25th of this month. It has also directed officials to examine complaints, documents and electronic evidence submitted by the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) and other candidates. Authorities must decide by the 22nd of this month whether to extend the nomination period in areas where candidates were unable to file their nominations.
The court stated that if the nomination deadline is extended, candidates must be given at least 48 additional hours to file their papers. It also directed officials to make additional arrangements at district collectorates wherever necessary to facilitate nomination filing. Adequate police security and CCTV surveillance must be provided at nomination centres to protect candidates and help ensure a safe and orderly election process.
