A traders’ association in Delhi has approached the Supreme Court seeking urgent directions regarding a protest called by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) near Connaught Place. The association expressed concerns about the possible impact of the demonstration on local businesses and the daily activities of traders in the area. However, the Supreme Court declined to issue immediate orders on the matter, indicating that it would not pass urgent directions in the circumstances presented before it.
During the proceedings, the Chief Justice of India (CJI) expressed the expectation that everyone would exercise discretion and act responsibly. The CJI also emphasised that protests should not adversely affect the livelihoods of small traders. The observations underline the need to balance the right to peaceful protest with the interests of businesses and people who depend on daily commercial activity. Further developments will depend on the course of the matter and any subsequent directions from the court.
