The sun rays did not touch the presiding deity of Lord Suryanarayana at the Arasavalli temple in Srikakulam district on Thursday. It is a long-standing tradition for the early morning sun rays to fall directly on the idol of the Sun God. The phenomenon is associated with the transition between Uttarayana and Dakshinayana and is traditionally observed on March 9 and 10 and October 1 and 2 every year.
Devotees were disappointed as the sun rays did not touch the main idol on Thursday. However, chief priest Ippili Shankara Sharma said there is a possibility of the sun rays touching the idol on Friday. Devotees visiting the temple tomorrow may therefore get an opportunity to witness the rare and spiritually significant phenomenon.
